About the Project

Branching Out is a long term plan, subject to future funding, which aims to increase the number of trees in our townships. The vision is for a resilient, connected and diverse urban forest that will contribute to the health and wellbeing of our community and to the creation of vibrant, livable and sustainable spaces.

Council is partnering with local community groups in the first phase of a multi-year effort to increase the number of trees in Surf Coast towns.

  • We're starting with a Winchelsea project developed with Growing Winchelsea as part of the Arboretum Trail Concept Plan, planting 80 trees in key areas around town.

Another 80 trees will be planted along main streets in Deans Marsh, led by the Deans Marsh Streetscaping Group.

  • Branching Out will increase the appeal of our towns as places to live in and visit, boosting local economies and contributing to a happier, healthier community.

Trees also improve mental health, support biodiversity, and provide habitats for wildlife.

  • Planting more trees will help adapt our townships to withstand the changing climate.

Trees are proven to reduce urban heat, air pollution and noise, while supporting biodiversity and improving stormwater filtration.

What's the next branch?

  • Developing a preferred species list for each town to ensure the right trees are planted in the right places.
  • Assessing the canopy cover and heat mapping to help determine future priority planting areas.
