About the Project

Branching Out is a long term plan, subject to future funding, which aims to increase the number of trees on public land in our townships. The vision is for a resilient, connected, tree network that will contribute to the health and wellbeing of our community and to the creation of vibrant, livable and sustainable spaces.

Council is partnering with local community groups in the first phase of a multi-year effort to increase the number of trees in Surf Coast towns. We have just completed our canopy mapping, and drafted a new ten year vision for our tree network across the whole shire. Please review the vision and see if we have got this right.

Have your say

Council is seeking feedback on an important ten year plan for our Branching Out Draft Implementation Plan.

Have your say from 13 May until 26 June 2026

  • Branching Out will increase the appeal of our towns as places to live in and visit, boosting local economies and contributing to a happier, healthier community.

Trees also improve mental health, support biodiversity, and provide habitats for wildlife.

  • Planting more trees will help our townships to adapt to the changing climate.

Trees are proven to reduce urban heat, air pollution and noise, while supporting biodiversity and improving stormwater filtration.

What's the next branch?

  • Consultation on our draft implementation plan
  • Developing a preferred species list for each town to ensure the right trees are planted in the right places.
